Greenland Holds Crucial Elections Amid Growing Tensions with the U.S

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025 (Esfand 21, 1403), parliamentary elections were held in Greenland. These elections were influenced by recent statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his desire to acquire the island.

In his recent speech to Congress, Trump declared that the United States would acquire Greenland by any means necessary, adding that this move would benefit the people of the island. He also promised billions of dollars in investments to create jobs and enrich the people of Greenland.

In response to these statements, Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Greenland, called Trump’s behavior disrespectful and emphasized that the people of Greenland deserve respectful treatment. She also stated that it seems the people of the island no longer wish for closer relations with the United States as they once did.

Polls show that 85% of Greenland’s residents oppose joining the U.S., with many viewing this idea as a threat to their identity and independence.

With the elections now concluded, the people of Greenland have chosen new representatives for their parliament, who may determine the future course of the island’s relations with Denmark and other countries.
